The Tamil Nadu government is working on providing chicken biryani to students as part of the mid-day meal scheme in schools. However, it has been clarified that this will not be implemented immediately, but will be started as a pilot project in the future and expanded based on its results.

Speaking on this, Education Minister Rajmohan Arumugam said that Chief Minister Vijay's aspiration is to provide chicken biryani to students. "When chicken biryani is being served to prisoners in jails, why not to our students?" he asked. However, he explained that hygiene and food safety are very important for this, which is why a pilot project will be taken up first.

Currently, as part of this scheme, students are being provided with nutritious food like upma, khichdi, and pongal, as well as a snack made of small grains twice a week.

Originally, this expansion programme was to be started on September 17, but due to the CM's visit to London, it was postponed to September 22. Also, since the election code of conduct is in force in Chengalpattu and Tiruppur districts in the wake of the by-elections to be held on October 6, this scheme has not been started there temporarily. Overall, while the expansion of the breakfast scheme will be implemented immediately, the chicken biryani proposal will depend on the results of a future pilot project.
