In the wake of the northeast monsoon and cyclone warnings in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Vijay has taken action at the field level. To ensure that the 2015 Chennai flood disaster does not repeat itself, he personally inspected the Chembarambakkam reservoir on the outskirts of Chennai. He asked the officials about the water level, inflow and outflow details. On this occasion, several key orders were issued to the officials.
Vijay ordered that the reservoir be monitored 24 hours a day and that extreme caution be exercised in the release of water. He suggested that water be released in a controlled manner in stages so that the people do not face any inconvenience and do not lead to flooding. He ordered that information be given to the people before releasing water, and coordination be done with the police, revenue and Chennai city administration bodies.
There is criticism that the city of Chennai suffered a terrible disaster due to the sudden release of water from Chembarambakkam during heavy rains in 2015. More than 400 people died in that incident and lakhs of houses were submerged. In this context, CM Vijay's visit has assumed significance.
'Tamilga Vetri Kalagam' (TVK) spokesperson M. Sathyakumar made key comments on this issue. "The disaster occurred in 2015 because the authorities delayed getting the permission of the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Such a thing should not happen again. The Chief Minister himself coming to the reservoir is a strong message to the authorities. We do not trust the authorities and we are warning them not to play games," he said.
