Mumbai witnessed tense atmosphere on Friday. While the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) staged protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, the 'Gen Next Mumbai' group staged a counter-protest against the party. Due to these rival protests, tense conditions prevailed in several parts of the city.
CJP founder Abhijeet Deepke had called for nationwide protests demanding the resignation of the CEC on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. In this context, protests were held at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and around Shivaji Park in Mumbai. Party spokesperson Saurav Das appealed to the people to show support for their protest.
In response, Gen Next Mumbai members staged a peaceful protest at the Ambedkar statue. On this occasion, a protester said, "People like Abhijeet Deepke are trying to destabilize the Constitution. But we know how to protect and respect the Constitution. That is why we are peacefully protesting at the Babasaheb Ambedkar statue. We will not tolerate the attitude of the Cockroach Janata Party under any circumstances."
The impact of these rival demonstrations also led to a heated argument between supporters of both the groups on social media. While some Gen Next supporters described the CJP members as 'mind-boggling Naxals', CJP sources alleged that the BJP was behind the Gen Next protests. The situation was brought under control by heavy deployment of police and security forces. These incidents reflect the extent to which the CJP's campaign against the Election Commission on the issue of revision of the voters' list has led to differences.
