Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah is preparing for a visit to India. He is likely to arrive in New Delhi on November 22 or 23. The main objective of the Nepalese government during this visit is to receive huge financial assistance from India. Along with this, it is expected to discuss border disputes, trade, air routes and hydroelectric projects.

The massive floods that hit Nepal on August 26 left a huge damage. Nearly 1,500 people lost their lives and more than 5,000 are missing. Roads, bridges and hydroelectric power stations were damaged. In this context, Nepal is seeking huge assistance from India for reconstruction work. It is hoping to provide funds with low conditions.

Nepal is also expected to mention the ongoing dispute over Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura areas. It is also said that it wants to review the trade agreement with India in advance. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is seeking to remove the difficulties faced by its exporters due to certification rules.

Currently, a majority of international flights to Nepal enter via Simara. This is increasing congestion. Nepal is seeking permission for new flight routes via Janakpur, Bhairahawa and Nepalgunj. India is acting cautiously on this proposal due to security reasons.

The 750 MW West Sethi, 480 MW Phukot Karnali and 450 MW Sethi River-6 projects are likely to be discussed. Several development projects built with Indian assistance will be inaugurated during this visit. Nepal is seeking grants and concessional loans from India for post-flood rehabilitation works.
