Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson Tushar Gandhi was detained by the Mumbai Police on Saturday. He was arrested while he was on his way to Mumbai's 'Kranti Maidan' to support the protest planned by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.
Tushar Gandhi, who is the president of 'Hum Bharat Ke Log', had called for a protest at Kranti Maidan at 3.30 pm on Saturday as the 'X' venue on Friday. However, the Gamdevi Police Station has not received any application regarding this event, nor has permission been given, said Zonal DCP Ragasudha R.
The police officer clarified that Kranti Maidan is not a suitable place for protests and there are High Court orders not to hold protests there. It seems that Tushar Gandhi was detained in this context. He was also seen on the stage during the protest event held at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on October 2.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened at Jantar Mantar in Delhi in view of the protest planned by the CJP and the All India Students Association (AISA). These organisations have called for an agitation against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of irregularities in the voter lists.
In the wake of the protests, more than 20,000 police and Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed in the national capital. The entry and exit gates of 45 stations of the Delhi Metro have been closed since Friday night. Train services to two major railway stations in Delhi have also been cancelled. As permission for the protest has not been received yet, surveillance has been increased across the city.
