YSRCP chief Jagan demanded the imposition of President's rule in Andhra Pradesh. On Sunday, he strongly accused the ruling party of killing democracy and the constitutional machinery of the local body election nomination process in the state.
Jagan criticized the lack of law and order in the state and the State Election Commission for working under the watchful eye of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. He alleged that TDP factions were hiding at the nomination centers and were violently obstructing YSRCP candidates. He alleged that announcing reservations just two days ago and asking for nominations within 24 hours was part of a conspiracy to not give time to the opposition.
Jagan recalled that in the past, when Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar was the SEC during his government, they had bravely gone to the elections and won. But he criticized the current coalition government for not having that courage.
The controversy has escalated in the wake of the clashes in Punganur, Annamayya district. When YSRCP MP Mithun Reddy went to file his nomination with his party candidates, violent clashes broke out between TDP and YSRCP workers. While TDP is accusing YSRCP of being responsible for this violence, YSRCP is counter-alleging that their MP was attacked. However, the police said that the tension arose because MP Mithun Reddy came with hundreds of followers, contrary to the rules.
Leaders of both parties have filed mutual complaints with the State Election Commission over these incidents. It is reported that the EC has sought reports on these allegations.
