The remarks made by Anant Kumar Singh, an MLA from the ruling Janata Dal (United) in Bihar, have created a political sensation. His initial statement that he had nine people killed to benefit former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar politically, and then changing his words within hours, has become a hot topic of controversy.
In the wake of the Bihar Legislative Council elections, Anant Singh expressed his deep dissatisfaction over the party's allocation of a ticket to his political rival Neeraj Kumar. Speaking on the occasion, he said, "I have a long association with Nitish Kumar. I stood by him when he was in difficult times. I got nine people killed for him."
These remarks created a huge uproar in political circles, and Anant Singh backtracked. Claiming that his words had been distorted, he brought out a new argument on the same evening. He explained that nine of his followers were killed during Lalu Prasad Yadav's rule and that there was an assassination attempt on him too. They accused Lalu's faction of committing these atrocities because they supported Nitish Kumar.
JDU immediately responded to Anant Singh's comments. The party's national spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad dismissed the comments as unnecessary. Nitish Kumar's political career was impeccable.
On the other hand, the opposition RJD has turned this development into a political weapon. RJD leaders criticized Nitish Kumar for joining hands with people with criminal records and said that this is an open acceptance of political murders. The controversy has assumed political significance at a time when the Bihar Legislative Council elections are scheduled to be held on October 23 and the counting of votes on the 27th.
