Pakistan has joined the list of top 10 countries facing food crises worldwide. A report has warned that food insecurity in the country is worsening day by day due to factors such as economic pressures, losses due to climate change and reduced aid. According to an analysis by 'Profit by Pakistan Today', 266 million people in 47 countries around the world are suffering from acute hunger. This number is double compared to a decade ago.
Almost two-thirds of those suffering from acute food crises, i.e. about 177 million people, are in just ten countries. Along with Pakistan, the list includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Congo, Sudan, Yemen, Myanmar, South Sudan and Syria. The report clarified that Pakistan has been included in this list based on the number of people suffering from hunger, not on the percentage of population.
About 10.6 million people in 51 rural areas of Pakistan are facing acute food shortages. The vulnerable groups are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The number of moderately and severely food insecure households, which was 15.92 percent in 2018-19, increased to 24.35 percent by 2024-25. This means that almost one in four households in the country is currently struggling with food shortages. At the same time, severe food insecurity has doubled from 2.37 percent to 5.04 percent.
According to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 117 percent between June 2019 and June 2025, reflecting economic pressures. In addition, climate change has reduced agricultural production and severely affected the income of rural households. As a result, people are increasingly dependent on markets for food.
During this period, people reduced their consumption of wheat, rice, pulses, meat, eggs and milk, but the consumption of margarine increased by 81 percent, the report said. Both food availability and purchasing power have been affected in Pakistan due to factors such as falling income and rising prices.
Hunger in Pakistan.. Shocking things in the report!
