Tension prevailed in the capital Delhi today. Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal were detained by the police for participating in protests demanding the resignation of Central Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. Along with them, several opposition leaders including Trinamool Congress MPs and former Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan were also detained and taken to a detention centre. Mamata Banerjee

had come to Delhi to participate in the protests launched by the opposition parties against the Election Commission and allegations related to the election process. When the police stopped her near South Avenue in central Delhi, she sat down at a nearby bus stand and protested. Following this, the police detained her and TMC MPs Derek O'Brien and Dola Sen.

On the other hand, Arvind Kejriwal, who was coming out of his residence to participate in the same protest, was detained by the police midway. Other leaders like former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPM MP John Brittas were also arrested.

Police have tightened security across Delhi in the wake of the CJP's call for the protest at Jantar Mantar. Police have also detained CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, who arrived in Delhi. Delhi Police said that restrictions on protests are in place in the city and the leaders were detained because they did not have prior permission for the protest.

The opposition has been expressing concerns over the transparency in the election process along with the revision of the voter list for some time. It is in this context that they have staged a protest demanding accountability from the Election Commission. In the wake of these arrests, opposition leaders have indicated that they will escalate their concerns further in the future.
