BRS leader and former minister Harish Rao has written to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, seeking to block the sale of stakes or attempts to privatise key power sector companies in Telangana. He expressed strong objection to the state government's proposal to raise funds by selling 26 per cent stake in TG Transco through an IPO. He appealed to the Congress national leadership to intervene immediately in the matter. Harish Rao
said in his letter that TG Transco, built with public money, is like the backbone of the state's power supply system. He explained that this company, with thousands of kilometers of power lines and high-voltage substations, is a very valuable asset. He expressed concern that if private stakes are allowed in Transco, it will also pave the way for the privatisation of TG Genco, Singareni and DISCOMs in the future.
Harish Rao questioned whether the state government's decision was against the Congress party's 2019 election manifesto and 2023 Raipur resolutions. He recalled that the Congress had previously announced that it was committed to disinvestment only in companies that were not strategically important and were in loss. The Congress, which had strongly opposed the central government's privatization of companies like LIC, said that acting differently after coming to power in the state was evidence of double standards. He demanded that the government immediately clarify the ownership rights of power companies.
Meanwhile, TG Transco sources revealed that no final decision has been taken on privatization, share sale or public issue so far.
