In a case that has caused a stir in the Indian Army, an Army Major, who is facing allegations of having illicit relations with the wives of two colonels, has found himself in trouble at the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT). The tribunal has rejected the Major's petition seeking a stay on the administrative proceedings initiated by the Army to remove him from service. The decision has paved the way for the process of removing the Major from service.

Going into details... Serious allegations have been made against a Major from the 11th Armed Regiment. He has been accused of having illicit relations with the wives of two senior officers (colonels), using banned apps, and misleading officials. The investigation into the matter began in October 2023 when the Major's wife complained to higher authorities.

Based on this complaint, the Army has set up a Court of Inquiry (CoI). After the investigation, the Army Chief issued a show cause notice to the Major in August this year. The notice stated that a court martial was unnecessary... and that the officer should not be continued in service.

The Major approached the Armed Forces Tribunal challenging the Army's actions. A bench of Justice Rajendra Menon and Lieutenant General CP Mohanty, which heard the petition, refused to stay the action being taken by the Army. It directed the Major to respond to the show cause notice and directed the Army to provide the necessary documents to present his arguments. After the Major submits his response, the Army will take a final decision on his removal from service. Meanwhile, the Major and his wife divorced by mutual consent in March this year.
