Indian scientist Ashok Sen has received a rare international honor. He has been awarded the prestigious Oscar Klein Medal-2026 for outstanding contributions to the field of physics. He has created history by becoming the first Indian physicist to receive this award. This recognition was given for his research on string theory, blackbody entropy, and string field theory. The International Center for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS) in Bengaluru revealed this.
Research on the secrets of the universe
Ashok Sen has done key research in modern theoretical physics. His work in string theory in particular has been recognized internationally. String theory is one of the theories that tries to explain how the fundamental particles and forces in the universe work. It is also important in research that connects gravity with quantum physics.
Sen's research on topics such as S-duality in string theory, precise calculation of the entropy of black holes, and string field theory contributed to the development of this field. This work influenced modern theoretical physics.
Education in Kolkata.. Research in Bangalore
Ashok Sen studied at Presidency College, Kolkata, and Calcutta University. He is currently working as the Infosys-Madhav Chair Professor at ICTS, Bangalore. He has received many prestigious awards in the past for his work in the field of science. He received the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2013. He received the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics in 2012 and the Dirac Medal in 2014. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1998. The Oscar Klein Medal, an
honor bestowed on giants like Hawking and Higgs, was inaugurated in 1988. This award is jointly presented annually by Stockholm University, Sweden, and the Nobel Committee in Physics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. It was established in the name of the famous Swedish theoretical physicist Oscar Klein. In the past, prominent scientists like Stephen Hawking, Peter Higgs, Chen-ning Yang, Steven Weinberg, and Hans Bethe have received this medal. On October 22 this year, Ashok Sen also delivered the Oscar Klein Memorial Lecture at Stockholm University on the topic 'Gravity from Strings and Strings from Gravity'.
A medal awarded to giants like Hawking.. for the first time to an Indian!
