Ramayana: Part 1' is the biggest budgeted and most prestigious film in the Indian film industry. Directed by Nitish Tiwari, the budget of this film is being advertised as around Rs. 2000 crores. When a huge investment is made at this level, it is not easy for a film to make a profit.
According to the India Today article, citing trade analysts' estimates, the film will have to achieve a gross collection of at least Rs. 5000 crores worldwide to recover its investment and turn a profit. Generally, a film is considered successful only if it collects 2.5 times the budget.
Trade expert Ramesh Bala believes that the film needs sky-high openings to reach this huge target. He analyzed that collecting Rs. 75 crore to Rs. 100 crores through advance bookings domestically and Rs. 150 crore to Rs. 200 crores through pre-sales worldwide is very crucial for the start.
Now, if the film earns Rs. 100-125 crores in India on the first day and Rs. 175-200 crores in gross worldwide, it is expected to have a strong foundation. It is estimated that 35-40 percent of the domestic collection will come from the southern markets.
As of October 22, about 1.33 lakh tickets have been sold through advance bookings for a limited number of available shows. This has collected Rs. 7.52 crores. However, being a big budget film, it cannot rely on openings alone. Only if the film gets good word of mouth can it survive in the long run. Apart from just theatrical collections, the producers will also get a large amount of income from the sale of satellite, digital and other rights.
Starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana and Ravi Dubey as Lakshmana, the film is being jointly produced by Yash's production house Monster Mind Creations and Namit Malhotra's Prime Focus Studios. The film is set to release worldwide on November 5 as a Diwali gift, with special premiere shows on November 4.
A huge challenge lies ahead for 'Ramayana'.. Do you know the break-even target
